There is a heated battle going on regarding the legalization of marijuana. The following are some truths to the myths being spread about this dangerous drug.

The pro-legalization supporters will say:

“Marijuana is safer than alcohol, yet it’s illegal.”

The truth:

  • If we applied that standard, alcohol would be illegal and crack-cocaine would be legal, since alcohol use trumps all other drugs with respect to its contribution to violent crime.
  • Alcohol, unlike marijuana or any other illegal drug, has a long, wide-spread history of use in Western culture, dating back to the Old Testament and Ancient Rome.

Simply put, the smoked form of marijuana is not considered modern medicine. On April 20th, 2006, the FDA issued an advisory concluding that no sound scientific studies have supported medical use of marijuana for treatment in the United States, and no animal or human data support the safety or efficacy of marijuana for general medical use.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), these measures are inconsistent with efforts to ensure medications undergo the rigorous scientific scrutiny of the FDA approval process and are proven safe and effective under the standards of the FD&C Act.
