A new report developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) providing state-by-state analyses of a wide range of behavioral health issues reveals that despite some wide variations among the states in the types and levels of problems they confront— every state must deal with these issues. For example, among those aged 12 and older, Iowa had less than half the current illicit drug use rate of Alaska (5.3-percent versus 13.5-percent) yet Iowa also was among the top 10 states with the highest levels of people age 12 and older currently participating in binge drinking (28.6-percent). The trembling can start just a day after they’re born.

Fevers take hold and the newborns become irritable, belting out constant high-pitched wails. They can have seizures and respiratory problems. In severe cases, death can occur within 10 days.

They are newborns in withdrawal from prescription painkillers taken by their mothers.

“These babies are very sad babies,” said Jean McCarthy, a neonatologist at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. “There’s been a dramatic increase in the last few years. It’s a huge epidemic.”

The number of infants born withdrawing from opiate-based pills such as oxycodone and hydrocodone is on the rise in the Tampa Bay area, doctors and other medical professionals say.

BREA For six months, this city has engaged in a legal battle to shut down three medical-marijuana dispensaries, with the disputes playing out in court rooms and closed-session City Council meetings.

But now — after one clinic was forcibly shuttered by a court-appointed receiver last week for violating a judge’s order to close — medical-marijuana supporters are getting vocal and say they will take their concerns to Brea’s streets.

YUMA, Ariz. – Federal agents working at the San Luis border station near Yuma seized nearly 400 pounds of cocaine worth nearly $4 million. The Border Patrol says the cocaine was found hidden in a tractor-trailer Saturday afternoon during a routine inspection.

Marijuana advocates aim to show medical value


Medical marijuana proponents are pushing back against a recent Drug Enforcement Agency declaration that marijuana has no accepted medical use.



Supporters said the drug makes patients eat right and keep weight on, which can be life-saving for those in need. An appeal is expected to be filed in the next two weeks.
