Communities mobilize to prevent substance abuse for a variety of reasons. They may form when a tragic event such as a drunk driving incident occurs or when opportunities for new funding arise or cutbacks necessitate cooperation or consolidation. The basic idea is that working together can move us forward. Successfully addressing abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs requires that local coalitions have every tool available to succeed in their mission. The process of mobilizing locally requires the commitment of concerned individuals who represent all facets of the community.

- Communities who collaborate involve more persons.
- Collaboration leverages funds for optimal impact.
- Diversity in approaches to solve difficult problems.
