SAN DIEGO -- Methamphetamine use increased slightly last year among arrestees in San Diego County who consented to being tested, it was announced Tuesday.

"Overall, arrestee drug use remained fairly stable over the last year -- and was relatively low compared with years past," said Cynthia Burke, director of criminal justice research for the San Diego Association of Governments. "However, data collected in 2009 do raise some concerns when it comes to methamphetamine use and availability."

According to SANDAG's study, 38 percent of females and 22 percent of males who were arrested locally in 2009 and agreed to be tested were found to have used methamphetamine.

That compares to 31 percent of females and 20 percent of males who tested positive for the drug after being arrested in 2008.

Positive methamphetamine tests among adult arrestees hit a peak in 2005, when 51 percent of females and 44 percent of males had the drug in their system after they were taken into custody, according to SANDAG.
